How to Prevent and Shrink Large Pores

Highly visible pores can feel unsightly, leading us to spend a large amount of money on products that promise to shrink large pores. The truth is, the size of your pores is genetic and you can’t shrink them. You need your pores to sweat and cool you down. They are important to keep you from overheating.

Everyone has pores, so it’s not something to be ashamed of when it comes to your skin. The face has between 400 and 800 pores per square centimeter, much more than the average 50 pores per square centimeter on your arms and legs. The sheer number of pores in one small area makes them more likely to be visible.

While you can’t shrink them, some skin damage, like sun exposure and acne, can cause them to get bigger. You can take preventative action to avoid this outcome and protect your skin. Instead of searching for how to get rid of large pores, you can find ways to make your pores at least appear smaller.

Striving for an even, healthy skin tone will help minimize the visibility of large facial pores. Here are some things you can do to help soothe your face with treatment for large pores and prevent expansion.

Prevent Pore Expansion

Collagen is the structure in your cells that keeps your skin firm and wrinkle-free. The sun’s rays break down the collagen, making skin sag. This tugs on the pores and causes them to stretch. Sweat will also force your skin to produce more oil, making the pores stand out more.

The best treatment for large pores is prevention. Wear a sunscreen or SPF moisturizer of 30 or higher every day to best protect your skin.

Keep Pores Healthy

Applying retinol every night helps to minimize the visibility of pores. A form of vitamin A, retinol is extremely popular in skincare for slowing and reversing signs of aging. It also works to keep pores open and clear of oil and dead skin cells, preventing breakouts. This helps pores appear much smaller.

Use a Facial Pore Cleanser

Choose a facial pore cleanser that has a specific beta hydroxy acid in it called salicylic acid. Its increased solubility in oil allows it to reach deeper into your pores to give them a proper cleanout. Apply every night to reduce the appearance of pores.

Exfoliate

Dead skin cells can build up around pores and make them look larger than they actually are. A gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant will help clear away the excess cells, reducing pore visibility. Alpha hydroxy acids are the best chemical exfoliant to use. Combined with the beta hydroxy acids in the facial pore cleanser, it is the perfect double whammy against dirt and cells making pores more visible.

Avoid Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are used in creams and lotions to mix water with oils and are often found in makeups and face creams. When applied to the face, emulsifiers can clog your pores, making them look much larger.

It is also difficult to conceal already large pores. Makeup gathers around their edges, making them more pronounced rather than hiding them. Instead, use light layers of powder base makeup to smooth over the skin without accentuating your pores.

For a non-toxic, pore cleansing exfoliant, take a look at Skin Moderne’s Clarify anti-acne solution. Clarify helps to refine pores, making them less visible, while gently exfoliating to help balance and brighten the skin. Harsh toxins and unnecessary additives can dry out your skin, making pores appear larger than they actually are.
